Quick answer

Send a wooden magnet greeting card by hand-canceling the envelope and using non-machinable postage to protect the magnet and card during transit.

Why wooden magnet cards need special handling

Unlike standard paper cards, wooden magnet greeting cards include a laser-engraved Baltic birch plywood magnet attached to the front. The magnet is strong enough to stay put, but postal sorting machines can bend envelopes, crack the wood, or separate the magnet. Hand-canceling and non-machinable postage keep the card intact.

How to mail your wooden magnet greeting card

  1. Step 1: Choose a sturdy envelope: Use the included ivory envelope or a similarly rigid A2 envelope. Do not use a flexible paper envelope — the magnet can bend it and get stuck in sorting equipment. A rigid envelope prevents the magnet from warping the mail piece.
  2. Step 2: Insert the card with the magnet facing up: Place the card inside so the magnet side is facing the back of the envelope (the side without the address). This reduces pressure on the magnet during hand-canceling. Avoid placing the magnet side against the address panel.
  3. Step 3: Seal and address the envelope: Seal the envelope completely. Write the address clearly in the center. Do not add extra thickness like bubble wrap — the card is designed to fit flat. Keep the envelope flat and uncluttered.
  4. Step 4: Request hand-canceling at the post office: Take the envelope to a USPS retail counter and ask for hand-canceling. Do not drop it in a collection box — machine canceling can crush the magnet. Hand-canceling is free and avoids machine damage.
  5. Step 5: Apply non-machinable postage: The card requires non-machinable rate postage (currently an extra surcharge on top of standard first-class postage). The clerk will calculate the exact amount. Do not use a standard stamp. Non-machinable postage ensures the envelope is processed manually.

Cards that work with this guide

  • "Look at You" Butterfly Wooden Magnet + Greeting Card: Hand-painted 1/8" Baltic birch plywood with a super-strong rare earth magnet. Magnet measures approximately 2.75" x 2". Card measures 4.25" x 5.5". The magnet's size and strength mean it won't slide around inside the envelope, but the wood layer still needs protection from machine rollers.
